Identifying a zipper

First things first, let's identify whether your zipper is plastic or metal.
simply said, a zipper consists of two rows of teeth on strips of tape and a slider that draws the teeth together. The slider joins or separates the elements when the zipper is opened or closed. However, zippers are very complex because there are so many different types, most people don't realize until they have to replace one. 

Anatomy of a zipper

A standard zipper is made up of 8 key elements as listed in the image below.

Zipper Function

• Closed end zipper: Since closed end zips can be opened partially, they are commonly used in application in our regular wear such as dresses, jeans, skirts, trousers/pants. Additionally they're  used in accessories like purses, handbags & luggage.
• Open end/ Separating zipper: They're often referred to as "jacket zippers" because they're most commonly used on jackets, but you'll also see separating zippers used on vests, zippered hoodies, coats, or any garment that needs to open all the way for ease of use
• Two way separating:  2-way zips are designed to open from the bottom of the zip as well as from the top. This is to give you more room at the hem of the coat so you will be more comfortable when you are sitting down.​
